Position: Executive General Manager Policy Reform and Regulation
Division: Policy
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Role Purpose
The Executive General Manager (EGM) Policy Reform and Regulation leads the development of SMC’s policy and engagement strategies. This role integrates member, regulator, and key government department relations, research, and consultation work streams to develop policy positions that support stronger retirements for working Australians. As part of the Executive Leadership team, the EGM also heads the Policy team. This public-facing role represents SMC in public engagement forums, acts as a media spokesperson, and maintains strategically important relationships with a range of external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Policy Development: Set priorities, delegate tasks, and monitor performance and delivery. Advocate with key policymakers. Provide policy and written advice.
- Engagement: Represent SMC on committees and working groups. Maintain relationships with stakeholders, including government representatives. Facilitate policy discussions.
- Leadership: Assist in the development and implementation of SMC’s mission, objectives, and strategic plan including setting and monitoring KPIs. Collaborate on policy and advocacy strategies.
Role Competencies
- Minimum ten years’ experience in senior management within superannuation, policy, economics, or related fields
- Proven leadership abilities and experience managing multi-disciplinary teams
- In-depth understanding of financial services policy, parliamentary and regulatory landscape
- Experience engaging with senior-level stakeholders and achieving consensus
- Strong project management and organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently or in small teams
- Strategic thinking and successful strategy execution
- High accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong risk management abilities
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office products
- Commitment to the profit-to-member fund ethos
