Breaking the deal: why LISTO needs to be fixed
Super is built on a social contract: workers put savings away for retirement, and in return, the Government gives a tax concession. The Low-Income Super Tax Offset was created as a fairness fix to ensure low-income workers also benefit from this deal. But LISTO has been frozen for the past 13 years and as a result, this social contract is breaking down for lower-income workers, 60% of whom are women.
Join the Super Members Council to hear how we plan to put a spotlight on this issue in the lead up to next year’s Federal Budget. SMC analysis of new ATO data shows millions of low-income workers are already missing out, while 1 in 3 workers will pay more tax on their super than their income when tax cuts apply from 2027.
The 30-minute webinar will feature:
- Georgia Brumby, SMC Deputy CEO – Welcome, introduction, report and advocacy overview
- Nicolette Boele MP, Independent for Bradfield – the perspective from Parliament
- Jo Kowalczyk, Women in Super, CEO – the impact on women and advocacy insights

Report Launch: Economic security in retirement: How life events affect older Australian women
Prepared for SMC by Impact Economics and Policy, this new report highlights how common life events experienced by older women—such as divorce, changes in health, informal caregiving, and family violence—can exacerbate existing inequities. These events are setting many women back financially at the end of their working lives and mean women typically enjoy less economic security in retirement than men. The report draws on the latest data and uses new economic modelling to understand the impact of these events, and what actions are needed to tackle gender inequities and put more women on track for economic security in retirement.
