On Wednesday, 9 September, SMC brought together Chairs, CEOs and senior leaders from Australia’s biggest profit-to-member super funds, alongside senior representatives from the Government, Opposition, regulators and leading retirement policy experts at Parliament House in Canberra for the annual SMC Super Summit.  

The Summit provided a unique opportunity for leaders across the super sector and public policy landscape to step back from day-to-day priorities and focus on the big issues shaping the future of retirement for millions of Australians 

Throughout the day, attendees heard from the Treasurer, the Shadow Treasurer, ASIC, APRA, the ATO, consumer advocates and super fund leaders, all focused on one question: how do we ensure Australia’s super system continues to deliver for current and future generations?  

A key highlight of the Summit was the launch of new research by SMC and ACIL Allen examining how Australians are spending their super in retirement. The research provides fresh insights into the role of super in supporting financial security throughout retirement and jobs in the broader economy.  

Another highlight of the day was a thought-provoking discussion on artificial intelligence and the future economy featuring Jeffrey Bleich, International Special Envoy at Anthropic and former U.S. Ambassador to Australia, in conversation with David Neal, CEO of IFM Investors.  

In the evening we were delighted to host at our Summit dinner, featuring a US Congressional delegation including Chairman Michael McCaul, Ranking Member Gregory Meeks, Rep Ami Bera and Rep Jimmy Panetta. Chairman McCaul joined former Ambassador Joe Hockey on stage for a facilitated discussion with IFM Investors Chair Cath Bowtell on foreign affairs, Australia’s world-leading super system and its significance for U.S.–Australia relations.

Why super for housing is a false promise

Like clockwork, a familiar bad idea returns to the political debate: let Australians raid their superannuation to buy a home.  This week the clock ticked over, followed by proposals being floated to use super to solve housing affordability challenges. An opposition frontbencher confirming options are being considered.   It follows a One Nation proposal to allow Australians to cash out a quarter of future compulsory super contributions for current spending.
 

The 12% Super Guarantee rate is not arbitrary; it is the minimum required

12% super is not a luxury. For most Australians it gives them a fighting chance of a dignified retirement. Super has one job: to provide a pay cheque through a retirement that could last almost as long as the career that funded it. Yet some are arguing the Super Guarantee should be cut. Their case rests on three claims: that a lower rate would still deliver an adequate retirement, higher super comes at the expense of wages, and lower super would not hurt the budget.

“We’re witnessing now the biggest threat to compulsory super, with preservation at its core, in the four decades since it began.”  Those were the words Treasurer Jim Chalmers gave to a packed room of super sector leaders at the Super Members Council's annual summit at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday, two days after One Nation announced its election commitment to allow Australians to withdraw 3% of their super for three years to deal with cost of living pressures.
