Senior Manager, Policy

The Super Members Council (SMC) is a strong voice advocating for more than 11 million Australians who have over $1.5 trillion in retirement savings managed by profit-to-member superannuation funds.

Our purpose is to protect and advance members’ interests throughout their lives, advocating on their behalf to ensure superannuation policy is stable, effective, and equitable.

The Senior Manager, Policy will play a pivotal role by providing policy insight and capability that supports SMC’s efforts to secure positive public policy outcomes for super fund members.

With a focus on strategic policy issues, this role will serve as a subject matter expert on superannuation and financial services policy and regulatory reform that supports the Australian profit-to-member superannuation sector and form strong relationships with senior regulators and Treasury.

Key focus areas for this role include: 

  • Working alongside the Executive General Manager, Policy, to manage the development of SMC’s policy agenda consistent with the Board endorsed vision and business plan and as part of the overarching advocacy strategy. 
  • Providing expert advice on strategic superannuation legislative & regulatory policy issues and reforms proposed to the current system settings as they apply to SMC member funds.
  • Providing sound policy advice, briefings and submissions on proposed legislative and regulatory change.
  • Ensuring SMC’s policy platform and positions are understood by key external stakeholders. 
  • Drafting reports for presentation to the SMC Board and consultative committees on policy issues as required.
  • Representing SMC at briefings and consultations with relevant departments and regulators on particular policy issues as required. 

Skills and attributes we are looking for include:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law, public policy or other related fields.
  • Post graduate qualifications in research within the finance or superannuation sector is desirable. 
  • At least five years’ experience in senior management in law, policy or related role. 
  • Broad experience leading/managing policy development, public affairs or commentary. 
  • Excellent public policy research, writing and analysis skills.

Experience in superannuation, not-for-profit superannuation or the financial services industry is strongly preferred. 

This role is a full-time (or potentially 0.8) role, based in Melbourne or Canberra. Flexible work conditions apply.
